I just got off the phone with my parents, and I had such a good conversation with them I thought I would blog about it RIGHT NOW.

Basically, the sum of it was my dad said, “Don’t take yourself so seriously.”

HIV/AIDS is a big flipping problem in Botswana. But it is not my responsibility. It is the responsibility of this culture and country to change its behavior. I’m just here to help out if people want it, but mostly I’m just here to learn about a new place, way of living, and make friends in Africa.

The girl from my Teen Club getting pregnant, TB patients not adhering to medication, men coming into the clinic for circumcision and testing positive, these are all unsolvable problems. They are unsolvable, but maybe manageable, if people want that. Anyway I’m not here to solve these problems (because nobody can) I’m just here to learn about them. So I won’t come out with any solutions to these problems after my 2 years here, but I’ll learn more about the problems themselves. And you know what, that’s valuable.

PS I feel like the opposite of a reality tv personality. When somebody asks me about my projects, I just want to be like, “Dude, I’m just here to make friends!”
