So apparently the Super Bowl was last week. I have no idea who was playing, or who won, or why everyone on facebook is now obsessed with Beyonce (I’m guessing she performed???) but I have been participating in Botswana’s version of the Super Bowl.

During January and February of every year Africa celebrates AFCON: the African Cup of Nations. Every African nation sends a team and the ones who qualify participate in weeks of football/soccer tournaments that are watched everywhere on the continent.

Botswana’s team didn’t qualify this year, but people are still watching the nightly games. Most people were supporting South Africa or Zambia, our closest neighbors. I was supporting Mali, mostly because I it’s wonderful that despite the political unrest people still have their priorites: football. And it’s wonderful to see an event like that bring people together.

Who will win? Nigeria? Burkina Faso? Mali? We’ll have to see!
